Everybody wants a Sugardaddy - brownie, that is. Or at least that's what Sugardaddy's Sumptuous Sweeties ® Co-founders, Tom Finney and Mark Ballard, firmly believe
Tom, a sales and marketing professional turned perfectionist-baker since the mid-1990s, has always had a passion for baking "occasion goodies" for his family and friends. He would share tons of baked goods with them, perfecting recipes along the way. As Tom says, "It's a bit amazing that our family, friends, and I didn't end up twice our size due to all the taste-testing to make that perfectly baked creation." In 2003, in his Westerville, Ohio kitchen, Tom developed the first of Sugardaddy's Sumptuous Sweeties ®, the Brunette Collection. These brownies, unlike any others, were round, uniformly moist and chewy without hard edges, earning them the labels of the Edgeless Brownie® and It's not your everyday brownie®.
Co-founder and Owner, Mark, got in on the act as he pushed Tom to create a companion Blonde Sumptuous Sweeties Collection in 2004. At the same time, they began discussions and dreaming about the opportunity to develop this concept as a brand - one with a solid value proposition. Their idea gave way to making these newly created Sumptuous Sweeties available to a select group of customers - those who would appreciate a unique, upscale, relationship-building experience with a gourmet brownie as the focal point.
Mark had other special ingredients to add to the recipe for success. A distinguished VP experienced in branding, business development, operations, and customer service with specialty retailers such as Victoria's Secret, Banana Republic, Gap, and Ann Taylor, Mark applied his business and marketing acumen to their business plan. Through different phases of developing concepts, they dubbed their brand Sugardaddy's Sumptuous Sweeties ®, a name that reflects the product and signals indulgence, sophistication, and fun.
In 2004, Mark and Tom made a life-changing decision to go forward with the development of Sugardaddy's Sumptuous Sweeties ®, which would become an online store, sugardaddys.com®. In 2005, they made the commitment to go live in time for the winter holiday season with full-scale selling of the Sumptuous Sweeties, also known at that time as the couture brownie®. To that end, they hired an intellectual property rights attorney to register the brands' various trademarks and a professional marketing team to create the identity of the brand and the online store. At the same time, Tom left his career to focus on Sugardaddy's full time. He and Mark developed the full business plan, finalized the products, created the unique packaging, secured the Sugardaddy's Factory Store®, and carefully began hiring talent to support the Sugardaddy's brand and business vision.
Sugardaddy's launched in time to celebrate Sweetest Day on October 15, 2005.
